A Modern Freudian Ego-Psychology Response Judith F. Chused, MD, presenter This program will continue to be devoted to revisiting James Strachey’s paper “The Nature of the Therapeutic Action in Psychoanalysis” (1934). We have heard the relational response to this paper from Dr. Jay Greenberg at a prior scientific Meeting. The remaining programs will feature analysts (Dr. Judith Chused, Dr. Shelley Rockwell, and then a clinical panel with Drs. Greenberg, Chused and Rockwell) with differing perspectives, who will address what ideas in Strachey’s paper continue to have value and meaning as they work and what is particularly pertinent to their clinical thinking and practice. Judith Fingert Chused, MD, is an emeritus training and supervising child, adolescent and adult analyst at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute. She has a private practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis with children, adolescents, and adults in Washington, DC, and is a supervising child and adolescent analyst at the Cleveland and Seattle Psychoanalytic Institutes. She is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She is also a member of the Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies in Princeton, New Jersey, and Aspen, Colorado, on the editorial board of the Psychoanalytic Quarterly, and reader for the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Psychiatry, and The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. She is the author of many psychiatric and psychoanalytic articles and has spoken throughout the United States, England, and Europe. After attending this program, participants will be able to: 1) Explain the relevance of James Strachey’s paper, “The Nature of the Therapeutic Action of Psychoanalysis,” to current clinical work by analyzing some of the important ideas in this paper. 2) Describe the use of non-verbal communication in psychoanalysis and be able to analyze its importance in clinical work. 3) Explain the importance of psychic development in building a theory of psychoanalytic technique and demonstrate this by presenting clinical material. This year we are delighted to present a four part series centered around contemporary views of James Strachey's classic paper, The Nature of the Therapeutic Action in Psychoanalysis. The first three evenings will feature analysts with differing perspectives. All three analysts will address how Strachey's ideas continue to have value and meaning as they work and where they differ. They will focus on their understanding of therapeutic action in their clinical thinking and practice. On the final evening the three presenters will return for a case presentation to demonstrate these different points of view. Friday, December 2, 2011 7:00 – 9:00 pm A Relational Response Jay R. A Relational Response Jay R. Greenberg, PhD, presenter James Strachey's classic paper on therapeutic action was simultaneously groundbreaking and very much of its time. Because of this, the paper provides a unique window through which we can examine the most important controversies about psychoanalytic goals, process, and technique. In his presentation, Dr. Greenberg will discuss Strachey's ideas in their historical context and will also explore the ways in which they illuminate contemporary thinking about the psychoanalytic situation. Jay R. Greenberg, PhD, is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute. He is the current editor of the Psychoanalytic Quarterly and a member of the North American Editorial Board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He is a former editor of the North America, International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and Contemporary Psychoanalysis. After attending this program, participants will be able to: 1) Explain the historical context and the development of psychoanalytic conceptualizations of therapeutic action that led to Strachey's paper; 2) Describe the ways in which Strachey's paper preserved the current ideas of his time; 3) Explain how Strachey's paper also created new ways of thinking that shifted psychoanalytic technique in new directions; 4) Apply Strachey's ideas about therapeutic action to contemporary treatment using examples from the presenter's clinical work. Rather than aligning himself with any particular psychoanalytic school of thought, Dr. Bolognini is able to integrate and respond to the patient with fine empathic attunement. He often speaks about his and the patient's preconscious speaking with each other. It as at this juncture, of preconscious communication, that Dr. Bolognini's engagement with the patient through "secret passages" leads to the inevitable teasing out of the transference/ countertransference relationship. Dr. Bolognini will present his own clinical work and respond to presented clinical work. His clinical examples take a microscopic focus on moments of struggle in the effort to find analytic engagement at the preconscious level. The humanistic story of the analyst and patient is illuminated in fantasy and reality. Linking crucial therapeutic process to his emerging ideas of shared unconscious dimensions, Dr. Bolognini will provide a forum for a lively discussion between all participants. Two clinicians will present a clinical hour and, after all participants have ample time to respond, Dr. Bolognini will bring their, and his, ideas into perspective. At the end of each day, three discussants will join Dr. Bolognini for an interactive discussion with each other and the entire group. Dr. Bolognini has more than 130 psychoanalytic publications and has published four books with a fifth out this year. In keeping with Dr. Bolognini's unique capacity to engage in such a lively and fruitful dialogue, the conference is limited to 60 participants to allow for in-depth discussion. Learning Objectives: This conference is designed to help you: • Analyze the concept of empathy in the context of Bolognini's distinction between "empathy" & "identification." • Demonstrate the capacity to describe analytic process beyond the level of its universality, focusing specifically on the analysand's unique "“secret passages" at the preconscious level. • Define interpsychic/"broad band" functioning and recognize it in clinical material which presents both intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamic currents. • Define the four fundamental mechanisms which produce both sleeping and daydreams, and apply them to demonstrate an ability to transform latent dream material into manifest content. • Summarize Bolognini's description of the dynamics of panic attacks and be able to apply it to clinical case material.
